A wraparound labeller positions the label, but the label construction and container surface determine whether it remains flat and secure. Test the production adhesive, face material and finished pack together.

Material selection

Match the face material, adhesive, liner and sensor as one construction.

The same artwork can behave differently when supplied on paper, flexible film or a clear construction. Stiffness, conformability, static, liner release and gap contrast all influence application.

Container surface

Use production-condition packs.

Glass

Check mould variation, coatings, condensation and cleanliness. A visually smooth bottle can still have dimensional variation or local surface contamination.

Plastic

Identify the container material and any treatment, release agent or flexible panel. Wall movement during rotation can alter label contact and placement.

Metal and cans

Check seams, beads, surface coatings, dents and the usable cylindrical panel. Keep guides and wrap contact away from features that disturb rotation.

Surface condition changes with the process

A bottle leaving a rinse, filler or cold process may not match a dry sample from the office. Record temperature, condensation, dust, oil, powder, product residue and the time between filling and labelling. Adhesive selection should be confirmed with the label supplier for the actual container material, product environment and storage conditions.

Compatibility trial

Separate machine application from long-term adhesion.

  • Web feeds and tracks consistently.
  • The sensor detects each label.
  • The label dispenses without damage.
  • The pack rotates and the label wraps smoothly.
  • Placement and seam meet the agreed method.

The label evaluation confirms

  • Adhesion after the relevant dwell period.
  • Resistance to condensation, handling and storage.
  • Appearance of bubbles, whitening or edge lift.
  • Compatibility with the container surface and product environment.
  • Suitability of the final adhesive and face material.

Use the sensor guide for detection tests and the placement and wrap-quality guide for measurement. Lancing can review samples, but the label supplier should confirm adhesive suitability for the final material and conditions.

Condition and dwell

Evaluate application quality separately from later adhesive performance.

A wraparound labeller controls how the label is detected, dispensed, placed and wrapped. It cannot by itself prove that an adhesive will remain suitable through storage, filling, chilling, transport or the product's complete service life.

Conditions to reproduce during a machine trial

  • Container temperature and surface condition at the point of labelling.
  • Dry, damp, dusty, oily or chemically exposed surfaces where these occur in production.
  • Filled-pack rigidity, weight and any panel movement under wrap pressure.
  • The final face stock, adhesive, release liner, gap and roll winding.
  • The shortest and longest expected pause between filling, labelling and downstream handling.

Checks that may need a separate materials evaluation

  • Adhesion after a defined dwell period rather than immediately after application.
  • Edge lift, tunnelling or movement after chilling, warming or transport simulation.
  • Interaction with container coatings, recycled-content variation or surface treatments.
  • Resistance to moisture, oils, cleaners or the intended product environment.
  • Removal, recycling or regulatory requirements specified by the label and container suppliers.

Record both the machine result and the later pack result so a placement problem is not confused with an adhesive or surface-compatibility problem. Surface-condition questions

Confirm what reaches the label panel in normal production.

Can condensation return after a bottle has been wiped?

Yes. If the bottle remains colder than the surrounding air's dew point, moisture can form again before the adhesive contacts the surface. Reproduce the real temperature, humidity and process delay during testing.

Should oily containers be cleaned before labelling?

The production process should define an achievable surface condition and the label construction must be approved for it. A specially cleaned trial pack is not representative if normal filling leaves oil or product residue.

What is adhesive dwell time?

Dwell time is the period after application during which the adhesive develops contact and bond. The immediate machine result and the later adhesion result should be inspected separately under agreed storage and handling conditions.
