Pressure-sensitive wraparound labels or shrink sleeves?

Pressure-sensitive wraparound labels are adhesive-backed labels dispensed from a liner and applied while a round container is controlled and rotated. Shrink sleeves are printed films placed around a container and then shrunk with heat. The better route depends on container geometry, required coverage, line equipment, heat sensitivity, coding, inspection and the evidence available for a representative trial.

What is pressure-sensitive wraparound labelling?

Pressure-sensitive wraparound labelling applies a self-adhesive label from a roll to a round container without a heat-shrink stage. The machine detects the container and label, dispenses the label at a controlled point and rotates or carries the container through a wrap station so the label is pressed onto the cylindrical surface.

The result depends on the container’s usable label panel, the label face material, adhesive, liner, gap, roll presentation and how consistently the pack rotates. The process guide explains the sequence in more detail.

What is a shrink sleeve?

A shrink sleeve is a printed film placed around a container and then exposed to a controlled heat process so it contracts to the pack shape. The sleeve can cover a large proportion of the container, but the finished result depends on film selection, artwork compensation, container geometry and the heat-shrink equipment.

Which method is usually considered for straight-sided round bottles?

A pressure-sensitive wraparound label is a natural route to assess for a stable, straight-sided round bottle when an adhesive label and visible seam meet the pack design. A shrink sleeve becomes a separate option where the project requires film coverage that follows more of the container or uses a heat-shrink decoration process.

The decision should include label appearance, container material, surface condition, production environment, utilities, coding, inspection, changeover and downstream handling. Avoid choosing from a visual mock-up alone.

When might a shrink sleeve be more suitable than a pressure-sensitive wraparound label?

A shrink sleeve may be more suitable when the decoration needs to follow a container shape that does not provide a practical cylindrical pressure-sensitive label panel, or when the pack design requires extensive film coverage. The container, sleeve material, artwork and heat process must be developed together rather than treated as interchangeable label components.

What should be tested before choosing either labelling method?

Test the production container and the intended decoration material under representative conditions. For pressure-sensitive labels, examine dispensing, sensing, placement, seam, wrinkles, bubbles and edge lift. For shrink sleeves, assess sleeve presentation, artwork position, shrink conformity and the effect of the heat process on the actual pack.

  • Use production-equivalent labels or sleeves rather than a visually similar substitute
