Changeover scope

Define what actually changes between formats.

Changing bottle diameter is only one part of a wraparound labeller change. The label roll, guide positions, sensor, wrap pressure, coding data and acceptance sample may all need separate verification.

Controlled sequence

Use the same order every time.

Follow the supplied machine manual and site safety procedure. Isolation, guarding and access must be handled by competent personnel for the specific installation.

Confirm the format

Match the work order, container, label roll, coding data and retained approved sample before removing the previous setup.

Make the machine safe

Stop the machine and use the required site and manufacturer procedure before entering guarded or moving areas.

Clean contact surfaces

Remove adhesive, dust and fragments from rollers, guides, peel edge, belts and sensors without using a method that damages the parts.

Set mechanical positions

Adjust the container path and wrap contacts from recorded datum points. Avoid relying on memory or unmarked handwheel positions.

Thread and teach

Load the correct roll direction, align the web, teach the sensor and verify one label at low-risk setup conditions.

Approve first-off packs

Check position, skew, seam, wrap quality and coding. Record the settings only after the accepted result is stable.

Changeover record

Make the accepted setup recoverable.

Record

  • Container and label references.
  • Guide, roller, belt and sensor positions.
  • Recipe or control values where applicable.
  • Coder data source and print position.
  • First accepted sample and sign-off.

Verify

  • First pack after start-up and after restart.
  • Web tracking and waste-liner take-up.
  • Container stability through the full cycle.
  • Label and code at normal operating conditions.
  • Removal of tools and restoration of safeguards.

Changeover time should be measured from the agreed start point to the first approved production pack, not only the mechanical adjustment. For production planning, combine the changeover method with the output speed guide and the operator training guide.

Changeover verification

Distinguish a completed adjustment from a released production format.

A changeover is complete only when the machine, materials, coding and quality checks have all returned to an approved condition. This avoids a fast mechanical setup being followed by repeated small corrections during the batch.

Common causes of a poor first-off result

  • The new container is not seated consistently against the same guides or support points.
  • The label web is threaded correctly but is not centred through the guide path or at the peel edge.
  • A stored sensor setting is used without confirming the actual production roll and gap.
  • Wrap pressure or contact is copied from a different diameter, surface or container rigidity.
  • The coder has the correct message but the print trigger or print area has not been checked.

Release the format deliberately

  • Inspect a defined first-off set rather than accepting one convenient pack.
  • Include the first pack after a normal stop and restart where that is part of production.
  • Check label position at more than one point around the circumference when seam relationship matters.
  • Record only settings that produced accepted packs under the stated operating conditions.
  • Retain an approved sample or controlled image where the site quality system permits it.
